St Patricks Day OBX Style
Traditional Irish Fare On St. Patrick’s Day…. there is nothing like corned beef and cabbage to celebrate St Patty’s day in the Outer Banks. And the Jolly Roger is serving it up to celebrate this traditional March holiday. Corned beef and cabbage are the traditional dish associated with this great American holiday for some very good reasons:
Corned Beef Was Seen As Luxury to Irish Immigrants
Popular lore states that beef cured with salt, corned beef, was seen as luxury to people in Ireland in the 19th and 20th century. As these people immigrated to America, by the millions, corned beef was readily available and relatively cheap. Thus it was probably not a difficult assumption that it’s popularity in America was assured.
And it is downright delicious
Have you ever had Corned Beef? It is the king of the delicatessen meats, made ultra famous as the star ingredient to the Reuben. The meat has a tender texture due to the salt, with which the flavor of the beef, is absolutely scrumptious. Add in the cabbage and whala..you have an incredible combination.
But As Always You can Have The Luck of The Irish But Skip The Corned Beef At The Jolly Roger
While we have traditional Irish faire, we will offer our full menu on St. Patricks’s Day. In fact you can create your own St Patrick’s Day holiday traditions. If you must go green we offer a traditional margarita or a lime daiquiri. Maybe even a touch of green lime to your Corona.
Live Music St Patrick’s Day

St Patrick’s Day: Fact Or Fiction
Was St Patrick’s Day based on a real person? The answer is yes. St Patrick was the patron Saint of Ireland. The holiday was created to honor him. But history aside, it is has evolved into so much more. Festivals, parades, drinks, merchandise and more all help us see green. But Back To St Patrick……..
St Patrick’s Day Outer Banks: Our Location
St Patrick Traditions Nationwide
So how crazy does the celebrating get? Here are a few examples:
The Green River
Well no one can deny that turning an entire river green is pretty over the top. Sounds like fiction. Every year the river in Chicago gets the green dye treatment. I would say that dumping enough powder in the water to change it’s color is a pretty big deal.
Guinness Beer
Guinness beer is traditionally known as the dark beer and is available at the Jolly Roger. On this stereo-typically Irish holiday it reaches a new zenith of popularity at 5X it’s normal daily sales.
What About Here In The Outer Banks of North Carolina
So on St Patricks Day look to your right and left right here in Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, and Nags Head…
- Is anyone around you celebrating St Patrick’s Day?
- Is everyone wearing green?
- Are they attending any sort of St Patrick’s Day gathering, party, or get together
My guess is if you are at the Jolly Roger, the answer is a resounding yes to all of the questions.
